Mosques & places of worship
Prayer times that are right without anybody changing a board
Daily timings, jama‘ah times, announcements and appeal totals on screens in the hall and the entrance.
Timings change every single day, and in most places they are kept on a board with sliding numbers that somebody has to walk up to and change. It is a small job done three hundred and sixty-five times a year, and it is wrong whenever the person who normally does it is away.
Everything else the community needs to know — the funeral this afternoon, the class on Saturday, the total raised so far — is announced once at the end of a gathering and then lives on a piece of paper by the door.
A screen handles all of it from one place. Timings are set for the month ahead, announcements are typed by whoever is in the office, and an appeal total is a number somebody changes rather than a poster somebody reprints.
What usually goes wrong
The starting point
- Timings are changed by hand every day and are wrong whenever that person is away
- Announcements are made once and then exist only on a sheet by the door
- An appeal total goes out of date the moment it is printed
Timings set for the month
Load the schedule once and the screen is correct every day without anybody touching it.
Announcements anyone in the office can make
Typed into a web page and on every screen in the building within seconds.
An appeal total that moves
A figure changed in the panel, which is what makes people give the second time.
In practice
What goes on the screens
Six things this trade puts up, rather than six things a signage brochure says you could.
Daily timings
Begins and jama‘ah times side by side, rolling forward on their own each day.
The next prayer, counting down
The single most-looked-at thing on the screen, in the largest type on it.
Announcements and classes
What is on this week, typed by whoever is in the office.
Funeral notices
Posted quickly and taken down afterwards, which paper handles badly.
Appeal and fundraising totals
A number that moves, on the wall people pass on the way out.
Ramadan and festival timetables
Loaded for the whole month in advance and scheduled to appear on the right night.
On the wall
What this looks like in a mosque
Two of the boards this trade runs. Both are built from a template in the panel, so the third one looks like the first and a price changed in one place is changed everywhere.
Placement
Where the screens go
The question every first conversation reaches within ten minutes. In the order most places buy them — and the first one is usually enough to start.
- 01The main hall, for timings and the next prayer
- 02The entrance, for announcements and notices
- 03The women’s section, showing the same thing
- 04The community room, for classes and appeals
The moment that matters
One alert, every screen, in seconds
Everything else on this page is the ordinary day. This is the reason people actually buy it.

Before you ask
Questions from this trade
- Can prayer times be loaded for a whole month at once?
- Yes. Load the month and the screen rolls forward on its own, so nobody has to change a board each day.
- Can it display Arabic or Urdu alongside English?
- Yes, including right-to-left layouts. Boards are designed cards, so any script that renders on a screen renders here.
- We are run by volunteers. Is it hard to look after?
- No. Making an announcement is typing into a web page, and two or three people can be given access so it never depends on one person being there.
- Can we start with one screen?
- Yes, and most do — the main hall first, the entrance later. Adding the second screen inside your band costs nothing.
